"Istanbul is literally and metaphorically a bridge between East and West. While hijab and other varieties of religious veiling are not regulated by law, Islamic culture proliferates the lives of the citizens. Istanbul also hosts the largest Gay Pride Parade in Europe. One of the most awe-inspiring parts of my time abroad was experiencing Ramadan. I fasted with the Muslim brothers and sisters of the community who, through their religious devotion, live in solidarity with the poor for 30 days of fasting, sunrise to sunset. In the summer, there are 15 hours of daylight in the hear and humidity. The humility, perseverance, and community that these people demonstrated changed my outlook on humanity."
